I haven't been there for a few years and the improvements to the place are wonderful. We have just spent a week on the coast showing my parents the beauty and history, this was definately a highlight. Anyone driving the coast HAS to stop and see it.

Hi Punakaiki, what a wonderful place you are,we visited via an AAT Kings tour in December 2007. The scenery is fantastic and would love to spend more time in the area next we visit!

What is the meaning of Punakaiki? How did it get its name?
Tks

The pancake rocks are absolutely spectacular. A definitely go place....However, the owner of the Wild Coast Cafe is a bit too rude. He shouted rudely to remove the people ate their own food on the outdoor tables regardless they are buying some food from his shop; and told an other group of young people who were eating and drinking some of their own food to leave, or pay $10 for using his table...... Can‚t he do it in a better manner??? He has the right to label all his table „restaurant food or drink only‰(but he didn‚t) He has not right to shout people rudely in front of the public.

We arrived in Punakaiki because of a booking error at Jackson's after more than a week touring around the south island. We didn't know what to expect, though we had stayed in Greymouth back in 1990.
Found Wave Watchers and just thought ... WOW!!! The sea was rugged, the sky grey and it was cold, but we always travel in winter, we like the cold and coming from Australia, there simply isn't enough cold weather there.
It was absolutely amazing, we just loved it, took 20-30 photos, walked to the Tavern for dinner, kicked back in front of the open fire, had a few beers, listened to the sea. It was simply amazing. We were just so sad that our itinerary didn't allow us to stay longer, we already had accommodation booked in Nelson.
NZ is an amazing, wonderful country, we loved it, though we never actually felt overseas and so many Aussies around and the ads, a lot are from home, but still, we had a wonderful time. Must have, we came home with 780 photos which I culled to 523 which we've printed and put in to a great picture book of our travels.

A very big thanks to my Greymouth Backpackers for telling me all about the Coastal Explorer Van that took me up to the Pancake Rocks!! They helped turn our day into something very special and what we saw was something quite spectacular! I can't wait to get back home and let my mates know how the Kiwi's really know how to turn on the scenary! Simply Breath taking!!

this one day i was working at a farm and for some reason the owner decided she would rather be a bitch than a nice person, so she kicked me out in the pouring rain. but in time i learned how to appreciate what this lady did because it started me on the most amazing, hitch hiking adventure i've ever had. the first place i stopped was punakaiki. wow.......wow. it was like something from a dream. the color of the grass, the stunning rock layers, and the blowhole, my god, the blowhole. well from that point on things to a turn for the better. thank you punakaiki for changing a potentially bad experience into something amazing. you will always have a place in my heart. -jon olmstead, vermont

I have enjoyed traveling around NZ so much that I've fallen in love with it. Punakaiki was definitely one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen (not only in NZ). I would love to see it again.

You have a lovely country and I had the privilege to experience most of its beauty. The pancake rocks are absolutely a must see while you visit New Zealand. I live in Europe, but your country has so much to offer and I will definetely come back one day to experience it once more.
It would a be a nice thing if you could order the picture that is on the top of your screen. I have the same sort of picture of Akaroa, so having this one too would be nice :-).
Cheers, Floris.

Hi... I visited New Zealand and of course Pan Cakes of PunAkAiki in February of 2003... It's very pleasant to travel around your website... it's remember me a lot of marvellous souvenirs. You have a lovely country and I'm sure if I have to leave France, it will be to leave in N.Z.

I am interested to know if cave creek is an easy accessible track to find. i am visiting the west coast in january and would like to visit the site of cave creek as my best friend at school "cathy mccarthy" died in the cave creek tradegy. Is there any 1/2 day or full day guided walk tours that go to cave creek that are suitable for an active adult and 11 year old child. If you dont know, who would be the best people to contact in regard to this.
Regards Jo Galvin Wellington

I recently was offered the opportunity to do a seven step demo painting for International Artist Magazine and chose a site just a little north of Punakaiki. Looking at your home page although the image is so small I think the spot I chose is the fourth image down. I am sending promotional material I gathered when there too. Being a person who has travelled fairly widely I can still say without a doubt that this part of the coast in God's Own is one of the most stunning, beautiful and fascinating places in the world. Great website too! Well done!
Kind regards
Lorna Allan

Love the site, very stylish. I will certainly reccommend the site to any fellow travellers wishing to visit the official site for the 'Jewel of the West Coast'! The photography is fabulous. Reminds me how pretty New Zealand is from my brief visit in 2002.
